Stephen was the last of
Elizabeth Blackwell Frazier's son to enlist and when she got word of his death she was not to be consoled. She got a young boy from the neighborhood to go with her to get
Stephen's body in Wilson, North Carolina were the body would be shipped. She and young
Newton were bringing the body back on a flat bed wagon. They had to cross a creek swollen by heavy rains and
Stephen's body washed off the wagon. She jumped into the creek and helped to retrieve her son's body. They tried to get a place to stay and dry off but people were afraid to let them in because of the typhoid.
Elizabeth got sick and she and
Stephen were buried the same day on Blackwell's Mountain in Granville County North Carolina.
